I recently finished the book Jumper, by Steven Gould. I remember watching the
movie about a decade ago and mostly enjoying it. But I learned that the book
was nothing like the movie, and since I read a breif description of it (I
believe it was by Howard Tayler of Schlock Mercenary) I thought it sounded like
something that I really wanted to read. And I was right.
I happened to notice it at our local library and I have to say that it's a
pretty fantastic book. The main character learns that he can telepor during an
extremely traumatic experience or two. He sets about learning about his powers
and what he can use them for. Of course one of the most obvious uses for that
kind of a power is robbing a bank, which I have a vague recollection that he
did in the movie, too, but those are about the only similarities.
I really enjoyed reading about Davy and how he learns to control his powers.
Unlike Harry Potter, who is constantly whining about how hard life is, and not
learning every possible thing he can about his power, Davy does experiment
quite a bit and figures out how to use his powers effectively. Eventually his
hubris catches up to him, causing problems, but I won't ruin the story for you.
You'll have to read the book to learn about those problems and how he handles
them.
Jumper, by Steven Gould, is a fantastic read. It does start out with a pretty
intense scene that may not be appropriate for all young adult readers, but
otherwise it's pretty darn good.
For me, this book gets 5/5, will read again.
